Theater students earn top awards

For four Alvarado High School theater students, a weekend trip to the Texas Thespians State Festival was a very productive one.

In addition to three days of educational workshops, performances and keynote speakers, AHS students came away with several accolades and achievements.

Of the 296 students who attended the festival, only 42 were named to the state Improv All-Stars roster and one of those was Alvarado’s Faith Bates. Because of the honor, she will be performing at the Improv main stage show on Sunday, Dec. 16.

There were also three Alvarado seniors who completed college auditions and received callbacks from several universities. Receiving a callback from the auditions means acceptance into that school’s theatre program, as well as scholarship offers.

Lucia Benegas received callbacks from Kilgore College, University of Texas-El Paso and the University of Southern Arkansas. Jeremiah Land received callbacks from Louisiana State University, Kilgore College and Cisco College.

Leia Murray received callbacks from St. Mary’s University-Minnesota, Louisiana State University, Stephen F. Austin University, Lamar University, Oklahoma Baptist University, Northwestern State University, Centenary College of Louisiana, Davidson College and Texas Wesleyan University.
